House - Promotional Photo of Cuddy's Mother - Candice Bergen

When Dr. House meets Arlene Cuddy (Candice Bergen) on House's January 17 episode, he thinks he's treating just another hypochondriac — unaware that his patient is the mother of his girlfriend, Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein).

"He's on the cusp of losing it," says Candice, who describes Arlene as "a gentile who would prefer to be a Jew. She considers House a goy unable to commit to her daughter." Oy! Adds exec producer David Shore, "Arlene's a tough-as-nails woman who's very hard on Cuddy. They love each other, but boy, do they drive each other crazy."

The family reunion continues on February 21, when Candice returns along with Lisa's sister, Lucinda (Paula Marshall). "Lucinda is the good daughter, " says Candice. Despite all these Cuddys converging in Princeton to meet the new man, Shore says fans shouldn't get their hopes up for an engagement. At least "not yet," he adds, refusing to confirm if Huddy will even remain coupled through the season.

TV Guide: The House Cast's Tweet Revenge

House Struggles with Emotion

Hugh Laurie: House struggles with emotions

via http://www.musicrooms.net/tv/21528-hugh-laurie-house-struggles-with-emotions.html

Hugh Laurie has admitted that his character in House is emotionally inept.

The 51-year-old British actor was commenting on new storylines from the popular American medical drama in which his character Dr Gregory House gets close to falling in love.

In the script, House is taken with his colleague Lisa Cuddy, and those feelings put the doctor in an unfamiliar situation.

“House’s capacity for emotional closeness is very limited,” Hugh confessed to British magazine Closer. “But he’s trying.”

House also considers adopting Lisa’s daughter, and Hugh – who has three grown up children of his own back in England - believes that this is a grand statement for a man of that age.

“He’s 51 and thinking of becoming a father to Lisa’s adopted daughter. That’s a big deal for someone who’s set in his ways like House,” Hugh said.

Hugh moved to Los Angeles seven years ago to start filming House and has gone on to receive a host of awards for his portrayal of the complex character.

Paula Marshall as Cuddy's Sister

Paula Marshall Cast as Cuddy's Sister on House

House is gearing up to meet Cuddy's family.

As previously reported, veteran actress Candice Bergen will guest star on this Fox hit as the mother of Dr. Lisa Cuddy. Look for her and her daughter's new boyfriend to clash.

Now, TV Guide also confirms that Cuddy's sister, Lucinda, is coming to town. She'll be portrayed by Paula Marshall.

Executive producer David Shore hints that there may be some secrecy involving Lucinda's presence on the show.

Marshall, meanwhile, will likely debut in January. She's best known for roles on Gary Unmarried, Californication and Nip/Tuck.

TV Guide's Hot Couple - House and Cuddy

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

David Shore @ York University

Yesterday we had a special guest speaker at York University talking about how he created and wrote today's most viewing show in the world. David Shore.
I couldn't write (nor remember) ALL the wonderful things that David Shore had said about the show and the concept of it but here's most of the highlights of the interview.

David Shore at York University
By Julie (un_sedentary)
via http://community.livejournal.com/house_cuddy_ot/35835.html

David Shore, the creator and executive producer of House, was at York University in Toronto (where I am a student) earlier for a presentation about television, what goes into producing a good show, and House in particular. It was mostly meant for film majors, but all House fans would have enjoyed it. I certainly did, and I'm not even close to majoring in film studies.

I noted down most of the highlights!

Before becoming a writer, he had gone to law school and actually practiced law for 6 years. Two of his friends at law school left for LA to become writers, which planted the seed in his head to do the same - which he eventually did. He worked out a deal with the firm he'd been working for that he would have the option to come back to work for them in two years, if his stint in Hollywood didn't work out, so according to him his venture to the south was not "brave" but in the worst case scenario, an anecdote to tell his colleagues a few years later. Luckily for him and for us, it worked out well! He actually said, "I wanted to be a lawyer from the time I was 12 until the second week of law school." FAMILIAR? BECAUSE I SQUEED. XD

He also worked on Due South - apparently after he'd had about 8 months of TV writing experience, he was offered a the position of head writer on it, which he was hesitant about taking because he was inexperienced like whoaaa for that job, and because it was in Canada while he wanted to be in LA. His agent told him to take it, "Because I needed the money and because I would fall flat on my face but no one south of the border would see it." He apologised for telling this story to a Canadian audience but we're Canadians, nothing pisses us off. XD

Regarding the genesis of House: it was pitched to him by Katie Jacobs and Paul Attanasio, who described it as a cop show in a hospital where the germs are the suspects. It's a "whatdunnit" instead of a "whodunnit". They pitched it to a few networks, then DS spent some time figuring out how to make it palatable, because something didn't feel right to him about it. He explained that people usually don't care about the "whodunnit", they watch for the "whydunnit", for the motive. "We don't care that the butler did it, we want to know why the butler did it. But germs don't have motive... one germ doesn't frame another germ or hide the knife under the liver." So they had to make it a show about people - the patients and the main characters.

He didn't want to write the caring doctor because it's not interesting. He referred to the line from Occam's Razor: "What would you want, a doctor who holds your hand while you die, or a doctor who ignores you while you get better?"

House is about deduction - what is the patient lying about and why is he lying. As DS explained, "everybody lies" is not necessarily about explicit lies where "the patient comes in and says black is white" etc. It's more about the way everyone sees the world from a subjective POV. For instance, when he was practicing law, he would have a client come in, tell him their story, and he would say, "Okay, let's go get that bastard." But in court after hearing the other side, he knew that had the other guy come into his office with his story, he would also have said, "Okay, let's go get that bastard." People remember things differently, forget different facts, and generally colour their view of the world with their own experiences, feelings, opinions, etc. House is about "finding the objective reality".

He says he asks the writers on House to write an assignment every week (I think he said every week - could be wrong) - to choose any topic in the world and write a paragraph about it with their own opinion. Then write another paragraph from the POV of the extreme opposite view. He referred to another line, this one from Acceptance:

Stacy: I had to do what I thought was right.
House: It's the only reason anyone does anything.

He explained that bad guys rarely do anything with no motive whatsoever other than to cause harm and suffering. Anyone who does anything, genuinely believes that their view is the correct one and they are doing the right thing. (Aside... this is really well done in Bones too... a lot of the time I sympathise with the killers on that show. XD)

Here the moderator commented that it was un-Canadian to explore such an asshole character. XD Then he asked about the writing process of the show. DS said that generally there is no "writers' room" on House, that they just discuss things broadly - what's gonna happen with House and Cuddy and things like that. "By the way, what is going to happen?" asked the eager mod. DS smiled mysteriously and shook his head. WE APPRECIATE THE TRY BB! WE WANT TO KNOW TOO!

Here I think someone slipped out the back, and David commented, "If you have to leave please do so before 8 because then I'll assume you went home to watch the show." XD

When they're writing an episode of House, they look for a disease that (1) can kill you, so the stakes are high - "a cold that just won't go away" won't really cut it, and (2) has symptoms that can look like any number of other diseases. "This is why you always hear oh maybe it's lupus." So if there's one really "cool" disease out there that turns your nose black it won't do, because there's nothing else it can be and it'll be diagnosed instantly.

After they pitched it as a procedural they wrote an outline about the characters, and became a little worried that they were pulling a "bait and switch" - the network thought they were getting a procedural but they were getting a more character driven show than they were led to expect. One of them said, "yeah, you're right, change it!" and then Paul Attanasio said, "No, just don't show the outline to the network and they'll like the script."

Incidentally this is how Robert Sean Leonard was cast (by fooling the network peeps XD). He read for the part for DS, Bryan Singer and someone from the network, and after he left the room, the network guy said they wanted Wilson to be nicer and kinder. Bryan said, "great idea!" and ran out into the hall where RSL was standing. DS went out after him and said he didn't think it was a great idea, to which Bryan replied, "Oh, it's a terrible idea, but he'll read it that way, get the part, and then we'll shoot it the way we want to." XD

The next question was about the S3 finale, where everyone left, and what he was going to do about writing himself into such a corner then. DS explained that when he wrote the line about them being in a 3-year fellowship in the Pilot he never imagined he would actually still be doing the show 3 years later, so he had to do something. And made a comment about how he really wrote Hart Hanson (BONES W00T) into a corner on Traitors when he knew he was leaving and wouldn't have to deal with it. XD

He also said he respects the audience's opinion, and reads the stuff they we write online thought he tries not to because it's depressing, especially when they're we're right. XD I think this was in the context of not writing for the audience but writing what you think is right for your show. (Fanservice or no fanservice, I'm not complaining about this season. XD)

The mod then referred to a line from Joy where Cuddy says to House, "Why do you even care? It's not like I'm ever going to ask you to babysit," and if he had in mind back then House actually babysitting, to which DS replied no. "But did you think about it now?" DS laughed and said yes. XD

The character of Kutner was written out because Kal Penn decided to go work at the White House, and gave them ample notice to plan this. For this they actually did assemble a writers' room ("Please explain what a writers' room is to the audience members who might not know." "Basically... all the writers get together in a room.") and decided to have him kill himself without any explanation, which served to send House further into his downward spiral and make him lose touch with reality - because this was a man he knew and had worked with, in addition to the lack of explanation and logic in such a thing happening. House is all about logic and this is such a huge thing he can't explain.

House in an institution was something that was always in the back of his mind because House was always just on the edge of sanity. He said Broken was a two-hour episode to explore his recovery fully, even though as it is it was severely compressed (he said it takes place over 2-3 months).

Asked about Hugh Laurie, says DS, "I consider him a friend and he claims to consider me his friend."

A lot of actors auditioned for the part, one of the stars of CSI:NY was actually even offered it but turned it down to go with the safer option. Patrick Dempsey auditioned, about which DS commented, "Grey's Anatomy needs Patrick Dempsey desperately and we need Hugh Laurie desperately!" (I love PD in GA but I don't think I'd've liked him as House.) He was starting to think that he had written something that doesn't occur in nature because nobody captured all the traits DS had written for House. This story was already repeated everywhere but basically they got a videotape sent over from Africa where Hugh was filming a movie, on which he had recorded himself reading for the part, and when they popped it into the VCR Bryan Singer kind of approached the TV and went, "You see, we need an all-American guy, like this guy!" XD

Apparently the networks always push for younger actors because younger = prettier but they needed someone who was a little beaten by life, like House, which I personally think is awesome. As I said, I don't think I'd've liked House if he was played by a pretty boy like Dempsey.

Hugh comes to every scene as prepared as the director, with ideas of how to begin and end the scene and how to block it. He doesn't give notes to other actors XD but sometimes says to the directors afterwards what he thinks could have been done. "He has that English thing, very passive aggressive." LOL. And they finally let him direct!

I missed the context for this anecdote, but DS said he once wrote a teaser for an episode of something where two guys walk by an alcove where a homeless man is sleeping, and they need to unload a truck or something there. One tells the other to get him out of the way, and when they roll him over they discover he's dead. It was then decided that he would have died of a stab wound so he must be bleeding, which led to the set looking like an alcove covered in blood and the poor homeless man "sleeping in it", which made the dialogue idiotic... they're walking by and think he's sleeping in a pool of blood, DS: "They've had a really long day." XD

He talked about subtlety - how a patient can have a rash but it mustn't be noticeable or highlighted until House notices it. Taub must be a good liar so that when House calls him on it, the audience thinks, "hmm, he might be lying," rather than, "of course he's lying."

Of the Q&A I just remember one particular question about House and Wilson's friendship and how proud DS is of it, because it's rare in television that men are more than just buds trying to get each other laid, and House and Wilson are close in a different way. The girl who asked that question very meaningfully kept asking if that friendship/relationship was ever going to progress, haha...

In closing, the mod asked if the leg pain was a metaphor because life is pain management, and House is dealing with pain management, to which DS replied that life is hard and painful and everyone feels it and frankly he's worried about those who don't. House has a very negative view of life, thought. "Do you?" asked the mod. "I don't know, do I?" he asked his wife who was sitting in the audience. "No, I don't, I love people. I love you!"

And we all went AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

House - Olivia Wilde on her return

Olivia Wilde — aka the beloved Thirteen — has some good news for House fans: She will definitely return to the Fox drama this season! Wilde took a leave of absence this fall to shoot a starring role in the big-budget sci-fi Western Cowboys and Aliens but confirms to EW that her comeback is already in the works.

“I am coming back to House. This season, as a matter of fact. It is a done deal,” Wilde told EW while attending the 19th Annual BAFTA LA Britannia Awards Thursday in Los Angeles. “I have been really lucky this year to be offered all these great film opportunities and I was also blessed to have a job in TV that really worked with me to get me to a place where I could do those films and not miss those opportunities like Tron.

“They have it all worked out and the viewers will find out where she went and why she left,” Wilde continued. “I think it is an interesting progression for her. Thirteen has been through a lot so it has to be escalated. She has Huntington’s. She had a brain tumor and went blind. She had a bad breakup. She’s sexually ambiguous. She had problems with drugs. I thought, `What else can (creator) David Shore possibly come up with?’ They had to take it to a whole new level. They are really taking some big risks this year, which is exciting.”

Until then, Wilde said she’s working on the body-swapping comedy The Change Up with Ryan Reynolds, Leslie Mann and Jason Bateman. “We’re shooting in Atlanta. It is so boring and dull. No one laughs. We just sit around and cry all day. [Laughs]. No, it is absolutely the funniest job.”

Spoiler: Which TV couple will be Engaged? (FOUR DOWN)

It's not Penny and Leonard from The Big Bang Theory. Sorry, nerd lovers—and lovers of lovers—everywhere.

The final couples in the running are:

House and Cuddy, House
Lois and Clark, Smallville
Michael and Holly, The Office
Chuck and Blair, Gossip Girl
Mark and Lexie, Grey's Anatomy
Now, your hint for today: The producers recently did something very misleading to make you think this couple is not getting engaged. Naughty, naughty...However, they will be getting engaged before the calendar year is up.

Guesses?

Got a hanky?

You'll need it.

P.S.: Remember how I said I'd be eliminating one couple every Wednesday? Well, either I need to get myself a new calendar or I'm that giving that I just up and decided to throw you another awesome-sauce elimination today. Confession: It's the latter but I'm far too modest to tell.

What do you guys think about House and Cuddy still on the list?

This is a fairly handsome pumpkin, don't you think? ;-)

Lisa Edelstein Talks 'House,' Accents and Getting Candice Bergen for a Mom
via http://www.popeater.com/2010/10/23/lisa-edelstein-house-interview-candice-bergen/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter

Although she's part of FOX's mega-hit 'House,' Lisa Edelstein doesn't have a big head when it comes to work. She doesn't even get caught up in the story lines or the spotlight, but she will put up the tab for lunch for her loyal set crew. Edelstein, who plays Dr. Cuddy, is going to have some serious mommy issues come January when 'Murphy Brown' icon Candice Bergen rolls on set as her mother. The ringlet beauty spoke to PopEater about Hugh Laurie's accent, Lifetime movies and the excitement of working with a TV legend.

What's up for this season?
So far there are the usual House-ian medical mysteries with a bit of relationship stuff thrown in to spice things up. There has been a lot of foreplay, more foreplay than high school.

Candice Bergen will be playing your mother.
It's been great. I really like her a lot. She's hilarious, she's brilliant, I couldn't have asked for a better mother.

Did you grow up watching 'Murphy Brown'?
Um I did, but I've never really been a big sitcom watcher. She was a huge star when I moved to L.A. Her show was the top show. She's not just funny, you can feel her intelligence and that's what makes her so spectacular to watch. She always adds something more than you'd expect.

Are you friends with Hugh's wife?
Jo doesn't live here so I don't see her very often. I don't think she's worried about me. As much as it seems that I'm his 'American wife,' he's working 14 hours a day and I just pop in and do my scenes. I barely see the man.

Do you ever feel sorry for Hugh having to put on an American accent all day?
It's really hard for him. There are plenty of tongue twisters in our dialogue to begin with, let alone having to do it in a different accent. He does sometimes get frustrated with himself but that said, he's a perfectionist, he hears mistakes in his accent that I'm completely unaware of.

How much longer do you think the show will go for?
I have no idea but so far so good for me.

Any favorite guest stars?
I can't even remember the episodes we've already shot this season so I have no ability to pull up who we've had on the show. It's funny it all melds together and turns into one long day at work. You're constantly memorizing lines so it's hard to remember what we shot two weeks ago.

You're in one of my favorite Lifetime movies, 'Obsessed.'
That's so funny! That's great to hear, thank you.

I love Lifetime movies. Unironically, they're the best especially if you're not feeling well.
It's so interesting to me. Yeah there are people who can't get enough of them. I know a lot of really smart people who love Lifetime movies, I think because they all tie themselves up nicely at the end.

Do you watch them at all?
No, they're not for me at all; they've been very good to me. I've done three of them but they're not my cup of tea.

What's the weirdest place you've been recognized?
I was recognized in Bangkok on New Year's Eve. There are millions of people out on New Year's Eve and when you go out you immediately get doused with water and covered with this white paste. Even covered with white goo and soaking wet, somebody recognized me. I had my glasses on; it was the most bizarre moment. One little head popped out of millions and went, 'House!'

How do you respond when you get recognized?
You just wave. They're just excited to see you on T.V and then you're there.

Do you do a royal wave?
I don't although as I get older I try to do a wave that requires less jiggling. I think that's why the Queen waves that way.

You're a vegetarian.
Yes for 28 years. I was really a natural vegetarian. I never liked meat; I don't feel comfortable with it. I also think it's better for your health. I bring my own food to the set because the food is sort of crappy.

You should complain to the producers.
Yeah I have, believe me. They don't want to spend a lot of money on the food. They're creative as they can be with the budget they're given.

Seriously, the show is an international hit and they can't spring some money so that people who work 16 hours a day can eat decently?
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Also the crew would feel better and have more energy if they ate better. What I'll do is order food from a healthy place and pay for it for the crew. We all do that, the actors, the writers. If I'm in an episode a lot and I'm around 14 hours a day I'll usually spring for a meal for the crew. It's not that unusual.

Airs: MON 8/7c NOV 8...

After a 200-year-old medicine jar found on an off-shore shipwreck shatters in a teenage girl's palm, she is admitted to Princeton Plainsboro for symptoms closely linked to smallpox. When the Center for Disease Control's Dr. Dave Broda institutes a lockdown on the hospital and suspends House's team's ability to diagnose, Masters grows suspicious of Broda's motives and becomes convinced that the patient is suffering from a different disease. The girl's father soon experiences similar symptoms, and House is forced to make a precarious decision that puts his own life in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Wilson and Sam comfort a 6-year-old chemotherapy patient who prompts them to examine their relationship.

House Training with Lisa Edelstein

For actress Lisa Edelstein, an early animal rescue marked the beginning of a lifelong passion—and led to a visit from Cesar before he was famous!
BY LARRY SUTTON

Not everybody who makes a living getting barked at is a dog trainer or a veterinarian. There’s also Lisa Edelstein, who plays Dr. Lisa Cuddy, Hugh Laurie’s long-suffering foil on the Fox hit drama House. Her role basically calls for her to endure the egomaniacal, Vicodin-popping Dr. House’s personal insults and sexual innuendos while keeping his career from imploding.

“But coming home to animals you love snaps you back to reality,” ” she tells Cesar’s Way.

Nowadays, those animals are her two rescue dogs, Shazam and Kapow. Shazam is a Schnoodle—a Schnauzer and Poodle mix—and Kapow is a Whoodle—a Wheaton Terrier and Poodle mix. “When I got Shazam, he was -pretty pathetic,” says Lisa. “He was only a puppy, but because he had gray hair, people thought he was much older. He was also very skinny. Had to be put in a hospital.” As for -Kapow, she says, “I wanted a breed that would get along well with Shazam, and it’s worked out great.”

Question: I’ve missed House two weeks in a row due to work, which is very depressing. Can I please have some scoop to cheer me up? —Kim
Ausiello: You should check out this new product that just hit the market. It’s called a DVR. All the cool kids are using it. In any event, exec producer Katie Jacobs teases that Taub’s marriage will be tested in “a completely unexpected way” later this season. Might this be connected to a certain spoiler that ran in AA last week? Maybe. Maybe not.
